About Location
Shelter Island is a tranquil, 8,000-acre island town located at the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Nestled between the North and South Forks, it is accessible only by ferry—from Greenport to the north and North Haven (near Sag Harbor) to the south. Often described as the low-key alternative to its glitzy neighbors, the island maintains a quiet, rural atmosphere with a population of approximately 3,250. It is famously free of traffic lights. Nearly one-third of the island is preserved by the Nature Conservancy, specifically the Mashomack Preserve, which features 11 miles of coastline and extensive hiking trails. The island is home to Shelter Island Heights, a historic district known for its well-preserved 19th-century Victorian cottages and American Shingle-style architecture. Popular activities include kayaking in calm inlets, cycling through scenic neighborhoods, and visiting public beaches such as Crescent Beach (known for sunsets) and Wades Beach.
