Funland

Funland is a family amusement park on the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, right next to the beach. It has been family-owned since 1962, and today five generations of the same family are involved in running it. With 18 rides, 16 games and a classic seaside atmosphere, Funland has been a summer favorite for families for more than 60 years. Every summer the park hires more than 165 high school and college students.

Position and compensation

Roles, pay & dates

A single role: you rotate between rides and games. Full training before you start. Minimum English level: Upper-intermediate. Role title, pay rates and dates as provided by the host.

Ride Operator & Game Attendant2 positions

$16.00 / hour

Operate amusement rides and games, plus the Jungle of Fun, the food cart and the Haunted Mansion photo stand. On rides you collect tickets, seat riders safely, watch the ride and help guests off. At games you take payments, hand out prizes and keep the line moving. You rotate between rides and games every day, outdoors at the beach, working with children and the public.

More hours: 50 – 55 / week if you want

Housing a short bike ride away

Rent is paid per season, not per week. Housing costs $3,000 per person for the whole summer, plus a $250 deposit and $100 for Wi-Fi. Housing is not on site: all options are a short bike ride from the park.

Funland offers six housing options, all within a short bike ride of the park. Funland covers a significant part of the real rent. One option is a host family for women only.

Move-in dates differ from one apartment to another, so your arrival date and your housing are planned together.

About Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Rehoboth Beach is a popular Atlantic beach town in southern Delaware, with a mile-long boardwalk, wide sandy beaches, restaurants, shops and summer events. Nearby you can visit Lewes, Dewey Beach and Cape Henlopen State Park. Delaware has no sales tax, which makes shopping cheaper.

Day trips and some two-day trips are allowed during the season. Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. are about 2.5 hours away. Last summer Adam visited Philadelphia, New York and Niagara Falls. Plan longer trips for after your job ends.

How to get there

Plan your arrival

Fly to Philadelphia (PHL)

Philadelphia International Airport is the main airport for Funland. Rehoboth Beach is about 120 miles (193 km) away, roughly 2.5 hours by car, longer in summer beach traffic.

Shuttle or Uber from PHL

A shuttle bus runs from the airport to Lewes Transit Center about twice a day, roughly $65 and 2–2.5 hours. From Lewes it is a short bus or Uber ride (about 15 minutes) to Rehoboth Beach. Uber or Lyft all the way costs roughly $200–$280, so share it in a group of 2–3.

Fly to Salisbury (SBY)

Salisbury–Ocean City Airport is a small regional airport with connecting flights via Philadelphia or Charlotte. Funland is about 45 miles (72 km) away, roughly 1 hour by car.

Taxi from SBY

There is no direct bus to Rehoboth Beach. Book a taxi or private car before you land, or try Uber or Lyft (few cars wait at this small airport). Expect roughly $90–$130 per car, easy to share for 2–3 students.

Important details

Requirements & first days

Upper-intermediate English. You talk to guests and parents all day.
Fast-paced work outdoors with children and the public. Funland looks for safety, courtesy, speed, a smile and teamwork.
Full training on rides and games before you start.
Shifts usually start at 10 am, 1 pm or 5 pm and end by 11 pm. Morning work before opening is common: cleaning, filling crane machines, making cotton candy, restocking prizes.
Before you arrive, you fill in a Duration of Work Agreement with your start date, time off and last day. It is needed for the end-of-season bonus.
Daily transportation: all housing options are a short bike ride from the park.
About seven days after you check into the program you apply for a Social Security card. You can start working before you receive it.
