Position and compensation

Roles, pay & dates

A single role: beach lifeguard. Second job opportunities are available. Minimum English level: Advanced. Role titles, pay rates and dates as provided by the host.

Paid training

Beach Lifeguard2 positions

$18.00 / hour + bonus

Under regular supervision, perform responsible lifesaving work in the Beach Services Division. You use judgement in dangerous or unusual situations and follow safety practices and procedures, working outdoors on the beach in various weather conditions, including rain storms and high heat advisories. You must be physically fit and a strong swimmer.

Start: May 9 – June 8
End: August 30 – September 30
Average hours: 40 - 60 / week
Overtime: Employer is overtime exempt
Training: 10 days, paid, start on May 11, May 25, June 1 or June 8
Bonus: $500, minimum 65 days worked
Uniform: Provided at no cost, worn daily

Please consider this carefully. You cannot move in without paying $550 on arrival, and you must arrive 2 days before your training starts.

Housing is duplex style, with 3–4 students per room.

You must work your full program dates and stay in the same housing to receive your deposit refund. Housing is 1 mile from work and you walk or ride a bicycle.

Plan your arrival

Fly to Myrtle Beach (MYR)

Myrtle Beach International Airport is the closest airline airport, with connections through major US hubs. North Myrtle Beach is about 20 miles (32 km) away, roughly 25–35 minutes by car.

Uber, Lyft or taxi from MYR

The easiest way to reach your housing: about 30 minutes. Expect roughly $45 by Uber or Lyft and about $60 by taxi. Taxis wait outside baggage claim. If you arrive with 2–3 friends, share one ride and split the cost.

Fly to Wilmington (ILM)

Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina is a good alternative. North Myrtle Beach is about 70 miles (113 km) away, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by car.

Uber or Lyft from ILM

There is no direct bus, so take an Uber or Lyft: about 1 hour 20 minutes, roughly $90–$130. Book an UberXL for a group of 2–3 with luggage and split the fare.

Requirements & first days

Advanced English for interacting with beach goers.
You must be physically fit and a strong swimmer. You must be able to swim 500 meters in 10 minutes or less and to lift or carry 10–100 pounds.
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, with daily exposure to heat and sun.
Attend the 10-day paid training, starting May 11, May 25, June 1 or June 8. You cannot work before you finish it.
Arrive 2 days before your training date for paperwork processing, and have the $550 for housing ready on arrival.
Daily transportation: housing is 1 mile from work, so you walk or ride a bicycle. No transportation cost.
A positive, friendly, customer-oriented attitude.
Uniform is provided at no cost and must be worn daily.
About seven days after you check into the program you apply for a Social Security card. You can start working before you receive it.
